The Chairman of the Health and Safety Executive NI (HSENI), Professor Peter McKie, CBE, opened this years conference on the 14th October in the Glenavon Hotel in Cookstown. Over one hundred delegates heard Professor McKie praise the industry for its commitment to improving safety standards.
As usual, the annual conference jointly hosted by HSENI and QPANI brought together a wide range of Health and Safety expertise from within the industry and addressed current issues for the industry such as Respirable Silica, Visible Felt Leadership, Slips Trips and Falls and Guarding and Conveyor Safety as well as providing updates on the Buildhealth and Safer by Design initiatives.

|
Speaking at the conference Professor McKie commented " The positive work of the quarry and quarry products industry, in raising health and safety standards, is a credit to the sector and should be an inspiration to other industries. The improvement by the companies in the sector is something that other industries could learn from."
In welcoming the HSENI Chairman to the conference, Pat Lyons, in his capacity as Chairman of QPANI, remarked on the leadership and teamwork shown by the industry in building a solid relationship with HSENI and sharing best practice within the sector but warned..." we are certainly now in a very challenging economic period and there is a risk that standards could slide if we loose focus on driving health and safety standards forward....... The Association is determined, through its member companies to strive for excellence in this vital area of health and safety."
